On the 2019 Bloomberg Richest Places rankings, Bernardsville NJ was named among the 100 richest in the United States and 18 New Jersey towns. It was one of two of the big movers on the list. Towns with at least 2,000 households are the only ones who qualify as "places" for purposes of Bloomberg's ranking.

Bernardsville was originally a section of Bernards Township known as Vealtown.[28] In 1840, Vealtown became Bernardsville, named after Sir Francis Bernard, Colonial governor of New Jersey from 1758 to 1760.
