Welcome to Summit NJ
Primarily, Summit NJ was a cozy farming community populated by about 300 people until 1837. Then it started to change from rural farming and milling to quasi-commercial. Right after the Civil War, Summit New Jersey became a summer resort area because of its crisp, clean mountain air and convenient proximity to New York City. And this attracted extremely wealthy people who built extensive summer estates in Summit NJ.

Originally incorporated as Summit Township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 23, 1869, from portions of New Providence Township (now Berkeley Heights) and Springfield Township, Summit was reincorporated as a city on March 8, 1899.
